Lest We Forget with Corporal Franck Dupéré
In this special episode released on Remembrance Day 2020, I speak with Corporal Franck Dupéré. It was April 2011. Frank was on patrol with an American unit. They were distributing textbooks to Afghan school kids. They were 300-meters from their base. The bomber was two meters away from him when the world shook. “I never saw the guy the bazaar was full of people and the blast threw me back and pushed the air from my lungs. I fell on my back, and I was a little bit lucky because I managed to keep calm. I remember thinking, ‘OK, I blew up. I can’t believe it. Is this an f—ing dream?’ And then I was like, do I have all my limbs because I couldn’t move my left arm. So, I felt for it with my right arm and it was still attached and then I looked to my right and I saw a leg lying there and I thought, ‘Oh no.’ “But I felt for my legs and I still had both of them and then I touched my face. It felt warm. Blood was squirting out of my neck. So, I thought, ‘OK, that’s it. I’m dead, and I lay back and looked at the sky and I felt myself dying.’” This is the story of a Canadian war hero told on our week of remembrance, lest we forget!
